February • Another Hospice Hero Honoured

Penny Craig celebrates her Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Award with husband Bill
and Carol Derbyshire, Executive Director of The Hospice of Windsor and Essex County
Former Hospice Clinical Director and Assistant Executive Director, Penny Craig, has become the third member of The Hospice of Windsor and Essex team to be honoured with the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Award. “It’s nice to receive the recognition, for having tried to make a difference, but if it goes unnoticed that’s O.K.”, Craig said.
Such has been the humble approach for Craig, who began volunteering at The Hospice in 1979, the year the agency was founded. By 1990, Executive Director – and fellow Diamond Jubilee Award recipient – Carol Derbyshire, had convinced Penny to make the move from her nursing position at Windsor Regional Hospital’s Metropolitan campus and become the Clinical Director at Hospice; a position that would evolve into the Assistant Executive Director’s post, a designation Penny retained until her retirement in 2008.
However, Derbyshire notes, “Penny is now doing ‘special projects’ here at Hospice. I don’t think she ever really retired. Penny is also the National President of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, travelling all over the world doing tremendous work. And her involvement with Scouting (Belle River Commissioner) led to the development of the Scouting Camp with Hospice. Everything she does, she does for other people” Derbyshire said. But as Penny sees it, it’s a fair trade, “I guess I have this ability to manage, mentor or administrate; but for me it’s been life giving!”
Earlier this year, Jayne Boyd, a Hospice founding member and the organizations original Executive Director, received the Diamond Jubilee Award for her community work, at a presentation overseen by NDP MP Joe Comartin.

February • Geraci Family is 'Paving a Path for a Cure'
 |

Frances, Vanessa, Rose and Erika, pose in front of the Paving a Path for a Cure event banner Oct. 14, honouring Frank Geraci their father and Rose’s husband.
All proceeds from the walk-a-thon were donated to The Hospice of Windsor and Essex County. |

Participants in the Paving a Path for a Cure walk-a-thon pose in front of the event banner Oct. 14 at Mic Mac Park. The event was created by Rose Geraci and her three daughters, Frances, Vanessa and Erika, in memory of her husband and their father, Frank Geraci.
The sky was grey and threatening rain throughout the day Oct. 14 until the powerful voice of Christina Apollonio prompted the sun to peek through the clouds and shine on the 300 walkers gathered at Mic Mac Park.
Singing I Miss You by Miley Cyrus, 10-year-old Apollonio’s song choice echoed why everyone was gathered; to remember and pay tribute to Frank Geraci.
“Frank passed away from cancer on July 8 in the Residential Home,” said his wife, Rose Geraci, referring to the 8-bed residence at The Hospice of Windsor and Essex County. “And because Hospice gave us and my husband so much comfort we wanted to do something to support them.”
That “something” the Geraci family did was organize Paving a Path for a Cure, a memorial fundraising walk-a-thon, in less than two months that raised $8, 390.30 in its inaugural campaign.
“This wouldn’t have happened without all the hard work my daughters put in,” said Geraci. “They made this walk happen and hopefully we can do this every year now.”
The event name was inspired by what Frank did for a living. Paving wasn’t just a job for Frank it was his passion, said Geraci, and it seemed to be a natural fit when the family was brainstorming names for the walk.
Geraci and her oldest daughter, Frances Geraci, said the event was able to come together in such a short period of time because of the generous donations of vendors and participants.
“So many people donated time and services,” said Frances. “It was unbelievable to me. My dad’s smile was so touching and is embedded in all our hearts. We will be sure to never let anyone forget him until we meet again.”
Paving a Path for a Cure wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work and dedication of some very special people who the Geraci family would like to take the time to thank.
Special thanks go to all those who made donations to the event:
- Ted Farron’s Gourmet Butcher Shop, Romano’s Specialty Meats & Italian Deli
- Devon Pageau of Mirror Image Hair & Beauty Salon, Nick and Franca Maltese of Rosa’s, Anthony Spina of the Tecumseh and Banwell Roads and Dougall Avenue Shoppers Drug Mart and Zehrs Great Food
- Starbucks
- Jim Cheetham of the Walker Road Tim Hortons
- Mario Parisi of Graphix Plus
- Carmela of Forget Me Not Flower Boutique
- Big Top Party Rentals
- Sarducci’s Pizzeria
- Rick Maltese of Ricardo’s Restaurant
- DJ Darcy Gadoury of Dynamic Sound and Mike Apollonio.
Special thanks to the “assembly line” of nieces, nephews, brothers, sisters and friends and family of Frank Geraci:

From left: Carol Derbyshire - Hospice Executive Director, Kathy Talbot, Bill Pillon, Wayne Bastien, Joe Perry – Director of Patient and Family Services, Matthew Durham – Director of Community Engagement and Advancement
It was a rocking good time, Saturday January 19th at the Knights of Columbus Hall, in Amherstburg, as The Wheelin Band got together with Ron Fryer and Friends for a night of live music. In total, six bands took to the stage – including The Hospice Jammers – and created more than just ‘music-to-the-ears’.
Over 17-hundred dollars was raised, at the one night extravaganza. All of the funds will go toward supporting the more than 30-different Wellness programs and services, at The Hospice Wellness Centre.

On the ice, Braydon Romualdi is the last line of defense for the LaSalle Sabers State Farm Tina Bezaire Agent hockey club; off the ice he’s an offensive power-house, focused on fund raising.
For the second year in a row, the young goalie netted the Top Pledge Collector prize, for the annual Hockey For Hospice Tournament. He says he raised the money in honour of his Grandma, who is fighting an illness right now.
All told Braydon brought in, an incredible, $2,400 in pledges! Amazing stats! With his contribution, the Sabers team total, topped $5,000 and put them into t he Hockey for Hospice Hall of Fame.

Braydon won VIA Rail round-trip transportation to Toronto, tickets to the Mississauga Steelheads game against the Oshawa Generals (The Leafs were locked-out when we put the prize together), overnight accommodations at the Downtown Marriott and tickets to the Hockey Hall of Fame.

January 18 • Executive Director Honoured with Diamond Jubilee Medal

Hospice Executive Director, Carol Derbyshire is presented with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal from Ontario Finance Minister Dwight Duncan
Windsor-Tecumseh MPP and Ontario Minister of Finance Dwight Duncan was on hand at The Hospice, Friday, Jan. 18, to present Executive Director Carol Derbyshire with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Award.
The Diamond Jubilee Medal is awarded to commendable Canadians who have made significant and extraordinary contributions to their communities. Undoubtedly, Carol easily falls into that category.
Synonymous with The Hospice, Carol began with the organization at the very beginning in 1979 as the coordinator of volunteers and fundraising. In her current role as executive director, she is involved with policy formulation, program planning and implementation, staff supervision and evaluation, interaction with the Board of Directors and other community health care sectors and the federal and provincial governments.
Carol is also heavily involved in the local community and sits on the Board of Directors for Hôtel-Dieu Grace Hospital and The Hospice Association of Ontario. Her past involvement includes roles with the New Canadian Centre of Excellence, the University of Windsor Board of Governors and Windsor Regional Hospital.
All of Carol’s accomplishments at The Hospice and within the community of Windsor and Essex County have been realized through sheer willpower and commitment to bettering her community. The recognition she is receiving by being awarded the Diamond Jubilee Medal is humbling for Carol.
“I’m very honoured to receive this medal,” said Carol. “But, this medal is not about me, I am just a small piece. This is about something much bigger. It is the solidarity of compassionate people- the Board of Directors, our doctors, nurses, social workers, spiritual care providers, community engagement and advancement services, volunteer services, finance, donors and volunteers- who have dedicated their lives to the hospice movement. We’ve accomplished all of this together.”

January 9 • Jack McGinnis Memorial Hockey Tournament

Etienne Rail, Paul Hart and Randy Sibbick present Hospice Coordinators Heather Robinson and Dana Hyde, with proceeds from the 32nd annual Jack McGinnis Memorial Hockey Tournament
Back in 1978, the Mildewed Maple Leaf Oldtimers thought it might be a good idea to put on a hockey tournament. Well a lot has changed over the years, most notably the fact that, since the tournament originated they’ve had to add a couple of divisions: “... because we’re not in our 30’s anymore”.
They just keep right on going. Admittedly, this was a tough year for the group, with the passing of their president Tom Gray, but the spirit lives on. In early December, 20-teams from Canada and 8 from the US came together for another wonderful event. |

December • Elephant in the Room, has Everyone Talking

From Doodle to Donation: 17-year old Stefan Hrnjak presents his original pencil drawing to Fr. Matt Durham, Director of Community Engagement & Advancement and Dana Hyde, Donor Relations Coordinator.

17-year old Stefan Hrnjak has a very common hobby ... he likes to doodle. He doesn’t really consider himself an artist, the Grade 12 student at Ste. Cecile plans to study engineering at the University of Toronto, next year. However, one look at his “doodles” and it’s clear that his artistry is matched by his modesty.
Last year, a grade 12 project assignment to draw a series of 10 pictures connected with a common theme, he chose portraits and the human body, led to a fascination with the challenge of drawing “detailed wrinkles”. A fellow classmate’s artistic theme for his project was Africa, but it inspired Stefan to tackle another “wrinkle challenge”, just for fun. Using only lead pencil, some serious focus and attention, he created a stunning portrait of the great ivory tusked creature. A time-lapse video of the drawing can be seen on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H07V5KVssqY
With the drawing complete, Stefan decided that he wanted to donate it. Our most sincere appreciation to Stefan for choosing The Hospice; where his wonderful work will hang in the Solcz Family Home for Children, at The Hospice Village, sure to inspire other young “doodlers” in our Children’s programs.

November • Cupcakes for the Cure raises $3,291.00 for Hospice

On a quiet Friday afternoon, Michelle Souchereau walked into The Hospice Wellness Centre and announced that she would like to make a donation. What a wonderful gesture! Michelle reached into her purse and pulled out a zip-lock bag, filled with money and cheques. “Here you go. It’s from our Cupcakes for the Cure fundraiser,” she said.
5-years ago Michelle, her family and a few friends decided to honour the memory of her sister-in-law Anne Marie, who lost her battle with Cancer, by raising money to support organizations that assist people who are fighting the disease. Their inspiration was drawn from a favorite past-time for both Anne Marie and Michelle, baking!
Following a 12-hour bake-a-thon, Michelle and her team offered their tasty treats to co-workers, friends and acquaintances. They accepted donations in exchange for a piece-of-cake, with icing on top. The result ... sweet success!
Thank you to Michelle and her team for their $3,291.00 donation to The Hospice.

November 16 • Hospice campaign tops its $50,000 fundraising goal
By Rebecca Wright, The Windsor Star November 16, 2012

Face to Face for Hospice campaign set a record for donations this year.
More than $66,000 was donated to the Hospice of Windsor and Essex County, surpassing the $50,000 goal, said campaign chairman John Fairley.
"We're just thrilled and overwhelmed with the support Windsor-Essex has shown," said Fairley, who hosts the local community TV Cogeco show Face to Face.
"It's amazing how this has just taken off. And it's just heart-to-heart, it's friend-to-friend, and it's employee-to-employee, and so I think that's what makes it special and what makes this campaign work."
The campaign, which began 10 years ago, recruits 500 canvassers to ask 10 people for $10 each. The money goes to support patients with critical illnesses seeking care at Hospice.
In the past nine years, the campaign has raised $575,000 for Hospice, which cares for more than 1,000 patients and their families a year.
"Unfortunately, cancer and the services of Hospice are getting more and more used by people of Windsor-Essex, and when you've had someone you work with or a neighbour or a family member who has needed the help of Hospice, then you understand how important they are to our community," said Fairley. |

“After 15 years we still have many councils wanting to host the pasta night each year,” said Agius. “If one council happens to not be available to host, we always make sure to have another one waiting in the wings.”
Beginning in 1998, the pasta evening has become a way for the K of C to maintain its strong community partnership with The Hospice.

June 19th • Eddy Urquhart Memorial Golf Tournament

John Porter, left, and Terry Hannan present Hospice Executive Director Carol Derbyshire with the proceeds from the 3rd Annual Eddy Urquhart Memorial Golf Tournament.
Terry Hannan and John Porter, each, have many passions, but one in particular they shared with their life-long buddy Eddy Urquhart … GOLF! “Once, we broke him out of the hospital to go golfing,” Terry says.
Even stronger than their passion for the game, is the love and respect they have for their dear friend who passed away 3 years ago. “Eddy would tell it like it is; didn’t pull any punches,” John adds.
In Eddy’s honour, Terry and John initiated the Eddy Urquhart Memorial Golf Tournament, held each year at the Rochester Place Golf Course in Belle River. With the support of area sponsors, including Electrozad Supply, the tournament has quickly become an important event on the area’s golf calendar. With over 60 participants, this year’s edition raised more than 3 thousand dollars.

June 12th • The Next Generation of Fundraisers

Grade 7 leadership camp students– from left to right, top row: Yuvie (Tecumseh Vista Academy), Paul (Bellewood Public School), Emma (Lakeshore Discovery Public School), Jackie (Anderdon Public School), Cassidy (Harrow Senior Public School), Jordan (Colchester North Public School), Olivia (A.V. Graham Elementary School) front row: Natalie (Tecumseh Vista), Julia (Colchester North) and Abbie (M.D. Bennie Public School)– from schools across the Greater Essex County District School Board gather at The Hospice of Windsor and Essex County on Tuesday afternoon to present a cheque for $25,000. The donation was the result of fundraisers the students created and ran at their respective schools.
There’s quite a bright future in fundraising and entrepreneurship in Windsor and Essex County.
Ten Grade 7 students from across Windsor and Essex County came to The Hospice on June 12 to donate the combined proceeds of fundraisers they, and many others, held at each of their schools in support of The Hospice. Not only did the fundraiser exercise help the students learn responsibility, planning and organization, they also learned more about what The Hospice does for people in the community living with a life-altering diagnosis.
The students presented their fundraisers to representatives from The Hospice over three days when they gathered at Gesstwood Camp in the spring and shared what made their ideas successful, what challenges they faced and the amount of money they were able to raise. They got creative with their fundraisers doing everything from selling candy-grams for different holidays to holding craft days to hosting a school-wide dance-a-thon.
In all, the students from the 60 participating elementary schools from the Greater Essex County District School Board were able to raise a total of $25,000, the highest ever cumulative total from a group attending the annual leadership camp program.
The Hospice of Windsor and Essex County would like to thank all the Grade 7 students who participated and helped to raise money. Everyone at The Hospice– especially our patients and families– greatly appreciate your efforts. |

May 30th • On a Wing and a Movie Rental

Erica Colovic, left, and Heather Robinson, right, event coordinators at The Hospice of Windsor and Essex County, accept a donation of $800 from Nancy and Rob Myers of Box Office Video. The money was raised by selling paper doves to costumers for $1 donation. The doves were then displayed in the window of the video rental store.
At The Hospice of Windsor and Essex County, it’s always a gift when we hear we’ve been able to help a family through a difficult time in their lives.
But when that family then decides to go out of their way to support us in the work we do in the community, that is truly astounding.
When the Box Office Video on the corner of Manning Road and Tecumseh Road opened in December 2011, store manager Rob Myers knew that he wanted to do something to support The Hospice.
Myers’ father, Ted, used the programs and services offered by The Hospice over his seven year battle with prostate cancer. Myers and his mother, Nancy, said Ted got involved in many programs at The Hospice.
“He got really involved with Drop In group,” said Nancy. “But he also did Radiant Touch, the Men’s Club and went to the Coffee House. I just can’t say enough about what Hospice was able to do for us.”
“When dad was in the Residential Home, the nurses became his best friends,” added Myers. “He knew them all.”
When Ted passed away in the Hospice Residential Home on Feb. 3, Myers knew that he wanted to help The Hospice in honour of his father.
As soon as his store opened, Myers began selling paper doves for a $1 donation with all proceeds going to The Hospice. After customers wrote their names on the doves he displayed them in the front window of the video rental store. Soon, said Myers, it began to look like a flock of doves had taken residence at Box Office Video.
After being opened for six months, Myers was able to raise $800 in support of The Hospice through his dove campaign. He and Nancy came by The Hospice May 30 to present their donation.
“It was a good start,” said Myers. “But I want to be able to raise even more money next time.”
He plans to begin another round of the campaign soon. |

February 27th • Lauren's Locks of Love

Lauren Cunningham, left, is presented with a cake for her tenth birthday by Carol Derbyshire, Executive Director of The Hospice of Windsor and Essex County. Lauren collected pledges to help raise money for The Hospice by cutting her hair and donating it to be made into wigs for cancer patients.
“Why doesn’t that little girl have hair like me, mommy?” Lauren Cunningham asked her mother when she saw a little girl who had leukemia and had lost her hair as a result of chemotherapy.
A few years later, Cunningham came up with an idea that would help people like that little girl with leukemia. She decided to start growing her hair and when it was long enough she would cut it and donate it to make wigs for cancer patients.
“She wanted to do something that would help others,” said Cunningham’s father, Roy Cunningham. “This was something she knew she could do.”
While growing her hair, Cunningham collected pledges from family and friends and decided she would donate the money she raised to The Hospice of Windsor and Essex County in honour of her grandmother. On Feb. 25– Cunningham’s tenth birthday– she held a bake sale at Shopper’s Drug Mart on Howard Avenue, adding the proceeds to her pledges. Cunningham also had her hair cut that afternoon.
Cunningham donated her hair to Locks of Love and raised a total of $1,807.31 for The Hospice.
In recognition of Cunningham’s compassion for others and hard work in raising over $1,800, the staff at The Hospice marked her tenth birthday with a birthday party and cake.
“Lauren was so selfless in her actions,” said Marianne Lanoue, Manager of Events at The Hospice. “We wanted to help her celebrate this milestone.” |

The 16th annual Hockey for Hospice co-chairs Tim Beaulieu and Paul Pietraszko, along with long-time Hospice volunteer, Doug Bertram are thrilled with the success of this year’s tournament. Utilizing 5-arenas (Amherstburg, LaSalle, Tecumseh, Adie Knox and Windsor Arena) it was a logistical achievement by all involved to stage 169 hockey games in 3-days
(Dec. 27-29).
This tournament would not be possible without the tremendous support of coaches, parents, volunteers, advertisers, sponsors and most importantly the players, whose generous pledges, community involvement and love for the game make this tournament memorable year after year.
The staff at The Hospice would like to extend a special thank you to Tim Beaulieu and his dedicated team of staff and volunteers from Freedom 55 Financial for all of their hard work each year to make this inspiring tournament a holiday tradition in Windsor and Essex County.

Freedom 55 Financial Regional Manager, Al Broadbent, presents Hospice Executive Director, Carol Derbyshire, with donations to the Hockey for Hospice campaign and the 2011 Hospice Gala. Hospice Event Coordinator, Heather Robinson, left, and Hospice Manager of Events, Marianne Lanoue, also take part in the presentation.
Final tournament results may be found on the Hockey For Hospice website:

December 12th • Singing Firefighter Sings Praises for Hospice

Executive Director of The Hospice of Windsor and Essex County, Carol Derbyshire, and Major Ralph Young, right, of the Salvation Army, accept cheques for $1,000 donations from Wayne Pestru, retired Windsor Fire and Rescue District Chief. Pestru donated the money from the sale of his CD A Walk Down Memory Lane to both organizations.
Wayne Pestru still remembers the first time he dealt with The Hospice of Windsor and Essex County.
“Hospice was the first organization to invite me to sing at a function,” said Pestru, a retired Windsor Fire and Rescue District Chief, also known as 'Windsor's Singing Firefighter'. “It was around the holidays and I sang songs from the 50s and 60s and then went into some Christmas music.”
Years after his first performance at a Hospice function, Pestru is repaying the organization for their kindness and generousity.
On Dec. 12, Pestru was at The Hospice to donate $1,000 from the sales of his CD, A Walk Down Memory Lane. Along with his generous donation to The Hospice, Pestru also contributed $1,000 to the Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services.
“This was my first CD,” said Pestru. “I really wanted to get a good collection of music from the 50s and 60s that people love and just make a good record.”
The CD was sold independently by Pestru along with his family and friends. He said it took about four months total to complete the project and that he received help with the manufacturing from Peter Palazzolo from the Canadian Conservatory of Music. Pestru notes that people were more than happy to purchase his CD when they heard who
would benefit from the proceeds.
“When people heard who the money was going to they were on board with buying the CD,” he said. “Everyone likes to help Hospice.”
Windsor's Singing Firefighter, Wayne Pestru will be performing Dec. 20 at Billie's Place, 3179 Sandwich St. in Windsor from
1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

December 8th • Knights of Columbus Donate Proceeds of Pasta Evening

Executive Director of The Hospice of Windsor and Essex County, Carol Derbyshire, accepts a cheque from Knights of Columbus Visitation Parish Council 8783 in Comber, Ontario. Representing the K of C are Deputy Grand Knight, Maurice Janisse, left, and Past Grand Knight, Len Lassaline.
The Hospice of Windsor and Essex County received an early Christmas gift Dec. 8 from long-time supporters The Knight of Columbus.
On Oct. 29, The Knights of Columbus Visitation Parish Council 8783, located in Comber, hosted the annual Knights of Columbus Pasta Evening with proceeds being donated to The Hospice. The event was a success, raising $6,450 from ticket sales and a variety of auctions over the course of the evening.
Event chair, Len Lassaline, said the pasta dinner rotates between city and county chapters of the K of C each year and this year his chapter was lucky enough to host the 14th annual dinner and show their support for The Hospice.
“We had about 130 people in attendance at this year's dinner,” said Lassaline. “And along with those folks that came out we also had 80 contributors for our three different auctions throughout the evening.”
The auction portion of the evening offered something for everyone. There was a silent auction, a live auction and most popular with the crowd, a balloon auction.
“The way the balloon auction worked was we had a bunch of balloons filled with helium,” said Lassaline. “You would pay $5 per balloon and then you would pop it and see what the slip of paper inside had written on it. Whichever number you found in your balloon, you would win the corresponding prize. But, some balloons said 'Thank you for your support' and didn't have a prize to win so it was really a game of chance.”
The event, said Deputy Grand Knight Maurice Janisse, is all about giving back to the community. “Hospice does so much for everyone else that this is the least we can do for Hospice,” said Janisse. |

The numbers are in and this year’s Tecumseh Triathlon, coupled with the 22nd annual Tim Hortons Kids for Hospice Triathlon, has raised 33 thousand dollars for The Hospice of Windsor and Essex County.
Triathlon organizers and sponsors presented the funds to Hospice Executive Director, Carol Derbyshire, Wednesday morning at The Hospice Village. Derbyshire recognized the sponsors continued dedication to the community “many of these sponsors, like Bell and Performance Ford, have been with us since the beginning,” Derbyshire said.
The monies raised will support many of the Children’s programs offered by The Hospice at The Solcz Home for Children and Family at The Hospice Village. Program Coordinator Joe Perry stressed the importance of offering care specifically for children “I was 12 when I found out my dad had cancer. That was back in the 60’s and people didn’t talk about it then. I thought no other kid was going through this, I felt so alone. It was a real struggle. This (the donation) will help us ensure that children and families will have the support to help them cope,” Perry said.
Triathlon organizer John McKibbon said “with the 33-thousand (dollars) we raised this year, we’re well over 500-thousand since we started 22-years ago.” Derbyshire added the triathlon has a strong connection to many families and in some cases has become part of family tradition “today I run into people, in the community, who took part in the event when they were kids, and now their kids are running in it.”
The Tim Hortons Kids for Hospice and Tecumseh Triathlons took place this past August at Waterfront and Lacasse parks. For more information on next year’s triathlons visit www.windsortriathlon.com

NDP MP Joe Comartin • National Palliative Care Strategy

NDP MP Joe Comartin told a gathering of media and health care professionals at The Hospice of Windsor and Essex County that a recently released report from the Parliamentary Committee on Palliative and Compassionate Care recommends establishing a National Palliative Care Strategy. Comartin, one of the co-chairs of the committee, thanked The Hospice for hosting some of the committee’s original research forums and for providing its services and programs to people in Windsor-Essex, “We are one of the few communities in this country that has palliative care services available. Only 16 to 30% (of people in Canada) have access to some type of palliative care” Comartin said.
The report “Not to be Forgotten: Care of Vulnerable Canadians” recommends creating a secretariat to provide leadership in establishing national standards for palliative and compassionate care. Comartin said, “We are hoping this report will be used as a model”.
Comartin said one of the most captivating findings, for the committee, was the dedication of the people who currently work in providing palliative care. He told the crowd, “We were just taken aback by the passion and compassion the people in palliative care have.”
Comartin, who last week received the Maclean’s/Dominion Institute award as Canada’s Most Knowledgeable Parliamentarian, said the findings of the report reaffirm his belief that the way The Hospice of Windsor and Essex County provides service is a model for Canada, “Would we be better moving to a community based palliative care? I think we would and this report makes that recommendation.” |

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Bayshore Home Health recognizes the need for nationwide government support of family caregivers
Vote To Support Caregivers social media campaign asks Canadians to “vote” for public funding for family caregivers
Mississauga, ON – Sept. 28, 2011 - Bayshore Home Health, a leading Canadian health care company, has kicked off a new social media campaign aimed at garnering public support for increased government funding and supportive policies for family and informal caregivers.
Recent Canadian statistics show that our seniors’ population is steadily on the rise, and expected to reach 6.7 million in 2021 and 9.2 million by 2041 (representing nearly one in four Canadians). In fact, the growth of our seniors’ population will account for close to half of the growth of the overall Canadian population in the next four decades.1 As our senior's population increases, so too does the percentage of middle-aged adults who comprise a demographic that juggles employment with the responsibility of caring for both elderly loved ones as well as their own family. Until now, the contributions of these family caregivers have largely gone unnoticed. Bayshore Home Health is encouraging governments to support this growing group of "care champions," who are rapidly becoming a formidable force in the future of Canada's health care system and significantly reducing it financial burden.
“Family caregivers make invaluable contributions to Canada's health care system and require and deserve the support of our provincial and federal governments," says Stuart Cottrelle, President of Bayshore Home Health. "Vote for Caregivers is an eight-week campaign encouraging all Canadians to log onto Facebook, share their stories and vote to support family caregivers.” The Vote to Support Caregivers Facebook page can be found at www.facebook.com/votetosupportcaregivers.
With the future outlook of an aging population, Bayshore is urging Canadian's to make the case for provincial and federal funding initiatives aimed at reducing financial stress and improving the lives of family caregivers – a program that if implemented, would be akin to the notable benefits of providing parental leave for parents to care for their young families.
An encouraging debate is currently underway in Ontario's general election, where some political parties are taking action and making the necessary steps toward providing caregivers with the support they need. For instance, the Ontario Liberals recently committed to providing eight weeks of unpaid job security to those individuals who need to take time off work to care for a sick loved one. The eight-week family caregiver leave program would give Ontarians time to care for family members suffering from a serious illness. The federal government has also recognized the importance of supporting family care giving with its own commitment to increase funding for community-based home re.
"Family care giving is a rewarding, yet stressful undertaking – an around the clock job, often adding an additional 20 hours per week caring for a loved one, over a four-year period," Cottrelle continues. "Bayshore Home Health supports family caregivers and will be taking the Vote to Support Caregivers campaign results to policy makers across the country, advocating for stronger government policies and the funding needed to care for our loved ones."
Bayshore Home Health is an organization that offers solutions and resources to family caregivers to help ease the burden on the caregiver’s own health. Bayshore encourages all levels of government to support family caregivers by providing the necessary funding to ensure public policies are established nation-wide.
About Bayshore Home Health

Face to Face Surpasses Annual Campaign Goal
With an army of just 230 face to face canvassers, The Hospice of Windsor & Essex County Inc. achieved its financial goal of $50,503.53 with some funds still trickling in.
The Annual Face to Face Campaign aims to recruit 500 people from Windsor and Essex County who will ask ten people for $10 in hopes of raising $50,000 to ensure The Hospice can continue to provide programs and services in this community. The 6 week campaign started on August 15th and ended September 30th and attributes much of this year’s success to social media and online resources. “Our savvy canvassers made use of the Facebook to Facebook as well as the email tools to assist them with gathering their pledges this year. Our long-time Face to Face supporters employed the traditional phone call or actual face to face meetings to do their asking”, stated Kathy Vincent. The exciting kick-off event in August and the recent Wrap up party featured new Faces as well as annual canvassers. Under the encouragement of John Fairley, who originated the Face to Face campaign, and Carol Derbyshire, Executive Director of The Hospice, the many Faces of Hospice were treated to food and entertainment and a special visit from The Windsor Spitfire player Kenny Ryan, who along with franchise representative Rob Gagnon, announced a surprise gift of $1,000 from the Spitfires Foundation. A number of other generous large donations were also received this year which helped us reach our campaign goal.
The Face to Face Fundraising efforts have just celebrated its 8th year and has been dubbed “the easiest fundraiser you’ll ever take part in. No need to walk, eat pasta, dress in your formal wear – just open your wallet and your heart.” Those interested in canvassing or making a donation are urged to contact The Hospice directly.
The mission of The Hospice is to support, educate and empower those who are affected by or caring for a person with a life-altering diagnosis. The Hospice of Windsor and Essex County Inc. is Canada’s largest community-based palliative care facility affectionately known as The Hospice Village. Patients, families and caregivers are offered support, education and the tools of empowerment to pursue opportunities for personal growth and wellness during a challenging time in their lives. To date, our innovative programs and services have supported and educated more than 30,000 people.
Our full range of services offered to individuals from the point of pre-diagnosis include: counseling, support groups, transportation, education, and home visits. Through the generous support of donors and funders, people in Windsor and Essex County have access to the first ever Hospice Village in Canada; featuring a Wellness Centre, Pain and Symptom Management Clinic, our Residential Home and the Solcz Family Home for Children and Family Programs. For more information about our services please visit www.thehospice.ca or contact Kathy Vincent, Public Relations and Communications Coordinator at 519.974.7100, or via email kvincent@thehospice.ca .
A personal thank you to all that assisted us. Whether you canvassed for us, communicated on our behalf or contributed with a pledge…you ALL played an integral part of the success of this year’s campaign.
THANK YOU so much!!!

August 2010
August 10th Hospice raises funds $10 at a time
The Windsor Star • Dylan Kristy The Hospice of Windsor and Essex County is inviting community members to contribute $10 each to its eighth annual Face to Face Campaign. The campaign’s goal is to recruit 500 people from Windsor and Essex County as “ambassadors” and have each person collect 10 pledges of $10 in the hope of raising $50,000.
Hospice communications coordinator Kathy Vincent said The Hospice of Windsor and Essex County affects many people. “Unfortunately here in Windsor we have a huge cancer affliction rate but we take care of everyone,” Vincent said. “We see patients that have a disease like heart disease, cancer, multiple sclerosis, pretty much all life-altering diagnosis.”
John Fairley, founder of the Face to Face Campaign, said the goal of the campaign is one that can be easily accomplished. “We’re not asking people to get dressed up for a gala or go rollerblading or anything else you can think of that people do for fundraisers,” Fairley said. “You can easily ask 10 people you know, work with, go to church with or the neighbours for $10 and when you have had the services at Hospice and have seen what it has done it’s life changing.”
The campaign runs from Aug. 15 to Sept. 30 and officially gets underway with a barbecue on Aug. 16.
The barbecue runs from noon to 2 p.m. at The Hospice Village at 6038 Empress St. and will allow interested participants the chance to see the facility.
The orientation and barbecue are free.
New to this year’s campaign is a social media element that will allow ambassadors to canvass with social networking tools to obtain pledges. |
