Hockey Tournament Score Funds for Hospice
Monday, May 01 2007: Hockey For Hospice Scores Again!
Tim Beaulieu, Co-Chair of the 11th Annual Hockey for Hospice tournament and owner of Encompass Insurance & Wealth Management presented a cheque today for $87,000 to The Hospice of Windsor and Essex County representing the proceeds from the Hockey for Hospice tournament held in Tecumseh, Amherstburg and Windsor on December 27 to 29, 2006. Since1995 the tournament has generated over $800,000 in support of Hospice.
"Today marks the next step towards our committee's goal of raising one million dollars for Hospice," said Mr. Beaulieu.
"We are very grateful to Tim Beaulieu, everyone on his organizing committee, and the tournament sponsors, particularly Freedom 55 Financial, Great West Life, Unity Insurance, and All Canadian Embroidery & Silk Screening for their ongoing support of Hospice programs and services through this important annual event," said Carol Derbyshire, Executive Director of The Hospice of Windsor and Essex County Inc.
Competing at arenas in Tecumseh, Amherstburg and Windsor, over 800 participants, ages 7 to 13 years, participated in this years' event. The tournament format, including 55 teams from Ontario and Michigan, is unique in that not only must teams rely upon their success on the ice, but they are also rewarded for their fundraising achievements. Before the first puck is dropped teams are assigned tournament points based upon the pledges collected for Hospice. These points also serve as the first tie breaker when necessary to determine which teams will move on to the playoffs.
"The Hospice of Windsor and Essex County Inc. is very fortunate to receive broad-based community support from initiatives such as Hockey for Hospice," added Carol Derbyshire.
Over a million dollars per year from fundraising initiatives and donations is needed to operate the existing programs and services including the new residential homes at Canada's largest and oldest community-based hospice.
